Social Media for Authors

Your writing deserves to be seen by more people

Posts often don’t get seen even by existing followers. Algorithms  seem to change all the time, you find something that works until it doesn’t. Should you be posting excerpts, talking about the writing process, personal life, behind-the-scenes, etc.? Literally have no idea.

Not only that here are so many authors on line (just look at the bookstagram hashtag) and it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. Everyone seems to be sharing the same content,.

And then there’s the visuals.

Your book cover might have be designed for you but that doesn’t mean you have any graphic design skills yourself. Feel embarrassed putting out content that doesn’t look polished or Instagram worthy. You want to look professional but you’re a writer, words are your thing not visuals.

You have a social media account to connect with your readers and you know you need to promote your books but selling gives you the ick. You’re worried people will be turned off by sales posts. How do you even write that kind of thing other than “buy my book?”

You became a writer to write.

You resent the amount of time you have to spend on social media plugging your work as it’s taking time away from doing what you love. Publishers not helping with creating a large following ?

Is it even worth it anyway?

You can’t see your account growing. You haven’t noticed any increase in sales. You dream of people commenting about your latest book and recommending you to friends but you only seem to be reaching other writers rather than readers. You feel inadequate seeing authors become more well known. Are they a better writer or just better at marketing? They seem to have a brand, no idea how you’d even begin to do that (for) yourself. You’d love to see your book climbing the charts but …..

Let’s get your social media sorted.

What do you need to know about social media?

What I can tell you about social media

Standing out from the crowd is important but a lot of success is just down to being consistently visible.

A pink tick inside a pink circle

People want to see real people, not slick polished feeds. They want to get to know the writer of the books they love.

A pink tick inside a pink circle indicating approval or correctness.

Behind the scenes content is King. Allowing the audience into your writing process makes them feel included and they’re willing you to succeed.

You don’t need a slick, glossy Instagram feed to succeed

Your audience won’t mind being sold to if there’s a balance with other kind of posts

Author Celia Anderson approached me for help with marketing her book as she “just wanted to get on with writing.” The majority of authors aren’t given a marketing budget nowadays so you’re expected to promote your books yourself. Celia was coming to the end of her current book deal and knew she had to stand out from the crowd to be offered another contract.

We worked on a strategy looking at who her audience were, who her books appealed to and how she could be more visible online without it all feeling too salesy.

I managed Celia’s social media on her behalf for a few months. During that time we managed to get her novel A New Lease of Life in the top 100 in the Amazon Kindle Charts, peaking at a heady nuber 14! No paid advertising, just making her and the book consistently visible. W then we moved over to a combination of Celia posting the more personal aspect and writers life and me advising her on strategy in monthly meetings. I also create graphics and Reels for her,

Celia was offered a new four book deal with her publishers and continues to spend her time writing, not stressing over social media.

Without Jude’s timely help and support I would still be struggling to find a way through the minefield that is social media for the uninitiated. Her concise, positive strategy meetings, clear-sighted advice and plans for next steps have completely revolutionised the way in which I approach marketing as an author. Jude comes highly recommended and would be an asset to anyone needing guidance and support with any aspect of social media content and publicity.
